Sacred Sendoffs by Sarah A. Bowen | Book Excerpt

“How do we maintain hope when surrounded by so much [animal] loss? Many of us have become wary. We are not sure how much more we can take in. Sometimes, it can feel too overwhelming to know.

“As a result, it can be easy to look for a way out, falling back on the ‘cycle of nature’ excuses. But, as we’ve explored in this book, humanity is complicit in changing ‘nature.’ To suggest that all animal deaths are beyond our ability to change — or beyond our responsibility — is a convenient spiritual bypass. If we want to profess being part of an interconnected, interdependent biosphere, then we have a responsibility to act. We need to try to heal the Earth — not just to sustain our own species, but to sustain all the life we claim to be interconnected with and compassionate about.”
